Friends of Bicycles for Humanity

Pat Montani

Pat Montani has started three diverse and successful companies that have become international leaders in the fields of telecommunications management, career and life skills information for youth and videoconferencing services.

His involvement in bicycles as a development tool began in 2004 when he and his wife Brenda collected a truck load of bicycles and delivered them to a development project in Mexico.

He then began researching the enormous need for affordable transport among the world's poorest people, and discovered a large number of collection and distribution organisations around the world. He immediately saw scope to get these groups working cooperatively, and established Bicycles For Humanity.

A newly inducted and enthusiastic Rotarian, Pat sees the enormous potential of Rotary to deliver affordable transport to the world's poorest people. He brings his experience in building solid teams that deliver quality products and services to Bicycles For Humanity and the Rotary initiative.

Brenda Montani

Brenda Montani has been a teacher, trauma therapist and a relationship counselor.

Her passion has always been to help others know compassion both in their relationships with themselves and in their relationships with others. We need each other.

Bicycles for Humanity affords us all the opportunity, in a real grassroots way, to care for and learn from each other about compassion and our need for connectedness. Her task is to make sure that all that Bicycles for Humanity involves itself in keeps this focus.

Michael Linke

Michael Linke has a background in publishing, having edited Australian Cyclist and ReNew, a hands-on Australian sustainable technology magazine.

His association with bicycles as a development tool began in 2003 when he volunteered with Re~Cycle, a UK charity that ships second hand bicycles to various African partners. A subsequent trip to South Africa convinced him of the need to develop distribution networks for the millions of discarded bikes available from the West.

During a visit to Namibia to help a grassroots HIV/AIDS support network get bicycles for their outreach volunteers, he realised the demand for affordable transport in Namibia was enormous and founded BEN Namibia. Michael also produces communications material for Bicycles For Humanity.

Steve Jennings

Steve JenningsSteve Jennings founded Maxim, the leading sports nutrition brand in Europe, competed as a professional cyclist on the tough European circuit and was one of the founding members of PepsiCo's 'Good-For-You' foods innovation group.

Having made several trips to South Africa, he has seen for himself how much difference to someone's life access to a bicycle can make. In the affluent west, bicycles are mostly used as recreational equipment, for people in Africa it can mean survival.

As someone who can build a brand and company from scratch, Steve brings creative, strategic & 'community-building' expertise, as well as a lifelong passion for the bicycle to Bicycles for Humanity.

Steve continues to ride his bicycle about 8,000 miles each year.

Paul Sherwen

Paul raced seven times in the Tour de France from 1978-1985. During his cycling career, he garnered the British National Road race championships in 1987. Since retiring from the sport '87 he has covered the Tour de France every year for several television networks around the world. He also worked closely with Lance Armstrong in his early professional career as the Public Relations Director of the now defunct Motorola Cycling Team. Paul and his family live in Busia, a small town on the Uganda/Kenya border where they operate a gold mine.

Aeron Learmonth

Aeron is a special Friend of Bicycles for Humanity and we are very proud to call him a founder as well. Although only 11 years old, Aeron is a true Humanitarian and leader in today's Global Community. The following article details a bit about what Aeron has accomplished is a sort time and is a true Friend of Humanity.

Lloyd Cadsby

I retired this past September, after a career of 44 years as a lawyer. I practiced commercial litigation throughout this time. and enjoyed the intellectual challenge, as well as the "action" and collegiality of the practice.

I was a member of the firm of Miller Thomson, which is a firm of approximately 500 lawyers, with offices in 10 cities throughout Canada, from Montreal to Vancouver.

Since retiring, I have been taking courses at Ryerson, travelling, cycling, cross country skiing and thoroughly enjoying pursuing my passions.

I'm married to Noreen, who also just retired. I have one daughter, Tammy, who practices law in London, England. Tammy is married to a great guy, who is a director of Rothschild bank.

Cycling is one of my passions. Reading the article in the Globe and Mail about B4H connected with my wish to do more than just enjoy my day. As we discussed, we have both felt a need to contribute to those less fortunate than we have been. As trite as it may sound, we both wish in some way to "make a difference".

I look forward to joining the Bicycles for Humanity team and helping in whatever way I can.

Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri

My music partner and co-writer Carmelo Luggeri is a serious cyclist and has taught me a lot about 'The Cycling World' explaining how racing works and how riders train towards one of the toughest sports there is.

Needless to say I now notice more cyclists in the country and around the streets of London. So the bicycle is a great way of getting from A to B and doesn't harm the environment.

How fantastic an idea is 'Bicycles For Humanity' to provide transport for people that will change their lives whilst at the same time giving a sense of freedom and pleasure.

Carmelo and I totally endorse this idea and we are very proud to put our names to it.

Hans Rey

Hans has been a professional athlete for 20 years, he still travels the world promoting biking and riding the unridable. He has been competing and demonstrating his talents in 60 countries, in recent years he's been filming documentaries with his 'Hans Rey Adventure Team', combining his extreme biking skills with different cultures and always in search of something historical or mysterious.

With 'Wheels 4 Life' Hans wants to give something back to the people he met on his journeys, he so very grateful for the opportunities and career he had through the sport. A bicycle can make all the difference in a persons life. It can be the difference between having a job or not, going to school or not, seeing a doctor or being seen by a doctor or not, etc......

For us bicycles are recreational equipment, for some people it can be survival.
