Katutura BEC
Family Hope Services (FHS) is a grassroots organisation that supports more than 350 orphans and vulnerable children in Katutura, the Apartheid-era township area of Windhoek. FHS's mission is to assist families and orphans and vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to gain a brighter future through empowerment, education and capacity-building programmes, with the aim of restoring joy, hope and dignity.
One of their main activities is training individuals in different skills, including sewing, patchwork, beadwork, knitting, other handcrafts and gardening.
A BEC was implemented at FHS in November 2007, providing community members with an income generation activity. The Katutura BEC is located on the edge of one of Windhoek's fastest growing shanty-towns, thus providing bicycles and maintenance services to some of the city's most disadvantaged people.
