Makena BEC
In partnership with the Makena Ecosystem Protection and Environmental Education Club (MEPEEC) in Kavango Region.
MEPEEC is a youth club formally registered with the Ministry of Youth and Sport. It consists of 15 youths between 16-23 years old that have been volunteering to educate the community along the Okavango River on sustainable use of local resources. They cover a large area up to 40 kms doing law enforcement patrols and educations excursions to schools. They have the support of a local lodge (lodges are common along the river), which gives them logistical assistance and help connecting the group with Ministry of Environment and Tourism and Ministry of Fisheries.
MEPEEC is also working towards implementing income generation activities for young people in the region, and a bicycle shop suits perfectly their needs as they can advocate for sustainable means of transport. The idea of having a bicycle shop arose after BEN Namibia distributed bicycles for home-based care volunteers in Nyangana Parish, 20km from MEPEEC site. Kavango region in North-eastern Namibia is one of the poorest areas in the country but face the fact that most resources for development go to the North area. A regional bicycle shop would benefits different groups such as home-based care volunteers in the region, young people who needs to engage in economic and social activities and other members of community who lacks affordable means of transport.
BEN Namibia will provide logistics management, training, monitoring and other field support to the project.
