Oshakati BEC
In partnership with the Rehabilitation Program from the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS), Oshana.
In 2005, representatives of groups living with disabilities in the Oshana Region held discussions with the MoHSS's Rehabilitation Program to identify potential income generation activities. A bicycle shop was on the top of the list. The idea arose after BEN Namibia distributed bicycles for home-based care volunteers caring for people living with disabilities.
During this project, a group of 15 people were trained in bicycle mechanics and it included 5 people with disabilities. Their involvement, commitment and abilities impressed everybody. The Rehabilitation Program decided that a BEC located in Oshakati, the biggest city in the Northern region would have a very positive impact for home-based care volunteers and people with disabilities. A site for their BEC is already negotiated with the MoHSS and municipality of Oshakati. They are now holding planning sessions on how to manage their BEC, which would be run mostly by people with disabilities as a way of encouraging them to lead a positive life.
BEN Namibia will provide logistics management, training, monitoring and other field support to the project.
