Bicycles for humanity (B4H) is a 100% voluntary, grass roots initiative, movement and organization. Its purpose is to improve a needy person's life in Africa, by providing them with the gift of an unused bicycle. The bicycle will empower them and provide freedom and access to health services and education or the chance for health workers (in particular AIDS workers) to visit many patients every day.

Hello, my name is Tom and I started the Sangudo chapter of B4H in December 2007, in the county of Lac Ste. Anne, located 110 km NW of Edmonton in central Alberta. I believe we are still the only "rural" chapter in Canada and as such it has different challenges then urban chapters.

My intention to establish a team and network of volunteers and like minded people has so far fallen short of my hopes and it is a challenge to raise the needed funding and hold collection drives. My friend Alistair has stepped up and contributed greatly. The two of us are still in need of volunteers to help us:

  • raise the funding to pay for the container and its shipping costs,
  • to help disassemble and load the bikes,
  • to improve this (my) web site and design handout material and such.

There are many other aspects to this undertaking that requires various skills and a versatile team would be a wonderful attribute. Thus, if you are interested in having some fun and volunteering a few hours of your time, please contact me, we could use your support.

In December of last year we were the only chapter on the prairies. Since then, I am happy to tell you, chapters in Calgary and Regina, among many others, where formed and they have recently shipped their first containers. Good show! And congratulations to them. Ours will also be shipped, hopefully this year, as soon as sufficient funding has been collected. On that note, I am so pleased to tell you that Barrhead Composite High School has agreed to raise some money for us. Hats off to them and many thanks for their generous efforts.

I am also thankful for the support from the drop-off location businesses. These businesses will accept your bicycle donations, during business hours, on ongoing basis.

Given our geographical location and thinly populated area, if any neighborly town is interested in partnering up, as a “sub-chapter” or function as an other collection point, it would be a great help and speed up the delivery date considerably.

My immediate goal is to purchase the shipping container. It looks like this could happen shortly after New Years, at what time I could start loading the approx. 200 bikes that have been donated and collected so far. The container will hold 400 - 500 bikes. The spaces and voids will be "stuffed" and filled with donated Soccer/Basket Ball Gear and Educational materials.

Should you know any well meaning philanthropist or company or business that would be interested in supporting us and could find it in their operating attitude to be associated with a rapidly growing world wide movement and is willing to support us by donating money or a container, please advise me or forward our needs and request. Their efforts would/could be visibly proclaimed on our web site and their name announced as a concerned and caring "Good Will" Company.

If you are a caring fun loving person and want to make a difference and have a large impact on some very needy people, please donate a bike, your time or money. The cost of shipping is approx. $20/bike. We are mainly in need of adult mountain style bikes with wide tires, in good condition, as the geographical conditions in Nimibia, where the bikes are destined, are very sandy. Bikes needing slight repairs are also appreciated and parts are in great demand. The bikes will be refurbished on location before being distributed. No junk please. We have also collected a fair amount of children's bikes already.

Thank you for your interest. To fully understand the impact of your contribution please go back and visit our main web site: www.bicycles-for-humanity.org
