Welcome!
Thank you for your interest and visit.
Bicycles for Humanity (B4H) is a 100% voluntary grass root initiative with the purpose of improving someone's life, simply by giving a gift of a used or unused bicycle.
Hello, my name is Tom Johansson and so far I am a one man chapter and inexperienced in this undertaking.
The Sangudo Chapter was launched in mid December 2007. The little town of Sangudo is geographically located exactly in the centre of the province of Alberta, 110 km NW of our capital city Edmonton.
I found out about B4H while watching TV at the end of November and started to investigate B4H on the net. As I was cruising around their web site, I immediately knew I wanted to get involved and contribute. I am impressed with the speed the organization's voluntary administrators work. A few e-mails and here I am, with a brand new web site to fill, e-mail and a workable plan. However, I could use lots of help and support.
As soon as the web site was published, I started to get calls and e-mails from donors around the province and many from out of province. We are no longer the only one on the prairie and I am happy to report that among many other places in N America, Edmonton, Calgary and Regina are in the process of starting up their new chapters.
My intentions are to establish a network of support and drop-off spots and involve a few more like-minded. Thus, as you read this, or have visit the main site and are inclined to get involved, please contact me or call 780-785-4051. We have enjoyable work to do. Your time commitment will be minimal while you feel good doing it. See Updates.
Given our geographical location and thinly populated areas, another way of collecting the bikes would be to establish "sub-chapter" in our outlying towns as collection points in those areas will be a necessity, regardless. Thus, I hope several people in our surrounding counties, will step up and get involved and act as volunteer area reps and can perhaps provide a safe drop-off spot as well.
My optimal goal is to have a container ready for shipping by the fall of 2008, which I believe will be destined for Namibia, Africa, B4H's present focus point. Perhaps it will happen sooner as other volunteers come onboard. I have the space to store all the bikes until it is time to order a sea container.
As I reach that point, canvassing for private and business monetary donations will be necessary. However, my immediate goal is to start canvassing for supporters and resources. As the word gets around I am certain that will happen. The reception up to now has been very favourable. See Updates.
I'll keep you posted as the chapter evolves, so keep looking in on my progress.
I am pleased to report that:
SMALL POWER Sales & Repairs in BARRHEAD,
BARSI ENTERPRISES in MAYERTHORPE, and
WHITECOURT YAMAHA in WHITECOURT
Midland Power Sports in Westlock. See updates
are among our supporters and have agreed to become official drop-off locations for your bicycles and soccer gear, in those towns.
We also collect kids soccer gear and suitable books for children and education.
If you have never contributed before, here is your chance. Do it now. Get involved, its fun, its easy and very satisfying.
Love & light //"tj"
