BEN Namibia - TKMOAMS Update
One of BEN Namibia's longest partnerships is with TKMOAMS (Oshivambo acronym that stands for "God save us from this terrible disease, AIDS"). TKMOAMS began operating in 1996 and has over 700 volunteers making regular home based care visits to people living with HIV/AIDS. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of people and communities affected by the disease in the regions of Oshana, Ohangwena and Omusati with home based care service.
From assessments of their work, it is clear that transport remains a crucial hindrance to their effectiveness. Thus far, BEN Namibia has delivered 47 bicycles to volunteers (May/2004, May/2005, August/2005). One group also participated in the prototyping phase of the bicycle-ambulance, and now we are manufacturing 11 ambulances for their volunteers, funded by the Direct Aid Programme from the Australian High Commission.
BEN Namibia and TKMOAMS have also started discussions on how to develop a BEC. Volunteers and clients are interested in participating in the project, implementing partnerships with other groups in their areas, and providing extra income to community members.
In August 2007, a BEC collected and loaded by the congregation of St Bartholomew's United Church, Ontario, Canada will be delivered to TKMOAMS, and their volunteers trained in bicycle mechanics. Most of the first load of bicycles will be refurbished and distributed to home based care volunteers.
